Cultural Events
For more than 80 years, since our founding in 1945, Nigerian Community Greater Manchester has kept Nigerian culture alive and visible across Greater Manchester. Our cultural events are not a single occasion but a thread running through the whole calendar year — the moments where Nigerian identity, in all its regional and ethnic variety, is celebrated openly and shared with the wider public rather than kept behind closed doors.
Nigeria at 66
Our flagship event each year is the Nigerian Independence Day celebration. In 2026, we mark Nigeria at 66 on Saturday 10th October at Nigeria House, 23 Platt Lane, Manchester — a full day built around cultural performances and traditional dance, authentic Nigerian cuisine, live music and entertainment, a dedicated family fun zone for children, and space for genuine community networking. The day carries our founding motto, Unity in Diversity, in its truest form: a celebration rooted in Nigerian heritage that is nonetheless open to everyone — members, friends of Nigeria, and neighbours from across Greater Manchester’s wider community, regardless of background.

Carrying the inheritance forward
These events matter for reasons beyond a single afternoon of celebration. They are how younger generations, born and raised in the UK, encounter the traditions, music, language and dress of a country many have never lived in — and how the community’s elders, who remember Nigeria before they made Manchester their home, see that inheritance carried forward rather than lost.
